Course Description
A stroke can occur at any age, though the risk significantly increases with advancing age. In the UK someone experiences stroke every five minutes which is around 100,000 people every year.
This CPD is designed to improve your understanding of stroke, including its types, causes, and effects. You’ll learn how to adapt exercises to meet the needs of stroke survivors that are within your scope of practice in your classes. Given that physical activity is crucial both for stroke prevention and for managing symptoms post-stroke, this training will equip you with the knowledge and skills to enhance the quality of life for stroke survivors. Please note this is not a Stroke Rehabilitation Qualification.
Learning Aims:
- Enhance understanding of the types and causes of stroke including risk factors and prevention strategies.
- Recognise the physical and mental health effects of stroke.
- Learn how to modify and adapt exercises to meet the needs of people following stroke to ensure safety and effectiveness.
- Enhance understanding of the role of physical activity in stroke recovery.
- Learn how to foster a supportive, inclusive environment that encourages mental well-being alongside physical recovery.
- Recognise your scope of practice and when to signpost for further support.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and explain the different types of strokes and their underlying causes, including key risk factors and prevention methods.
- Recognise and describe the common physical impairments, cognitive or emotional changes that may result from a stroke.
- Develop the ability to modify and adapt exercises to meet the needs of stroke survivors.
- Acquire knowledge of how physical activity aids stroke recovery and rehabilitation and when to refer or signpost clients for further support.

The training day is 10am-4pm.
For the online CPD day, we will use Zoom (please check your system requirements here) to deliver these CPDs so you will require a stable internet connection. Please read the requirements for completing your practical CPD online here. By booking an online date, you’re accepting you will meet the requirements outlined.
Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear to participate – trainers are recommended.
