Become an exercise instructor for older adults
How did you find out about the FABS course?
Through a website called Restless – for over 50s – I saw an advert to be a Mioli instructor and it was literally a lightbulb moment.
What did you do before becoming a Move it or Lose it instructor?
I was a radio journalist for over 25 years. It was great fun, and I did every role, from roving reporter at crime scenes to reading the news and also presenting 4 hour long shows with music and chat. I love meeting people and truly believe everyone has a story to tell , and to never stereotype people either.
What do you love most about being an instructor?
I love looking out at smiling faces in classes , and seeing friendships made too. I also really enjoy putting the routines together and choosing the music – and although I have been doing this less than 6 months, its so wonderful when people say they feel energised by the classes and are seeing the benefits.
What would you say to anyone thinking about doing the FABS course and becoming an instructor? Absolutely do it ! The support from the team all the way through the training was super. The course itself was just right – it challenged me as I had no background in health or fitness, but also made complete sense too. And then you get friendship and support from the other instructors too which has really helped me. It can be nerve wracking to set up new classes and start up but you don’t feel alone with a huge hive-mind to tap into!
Surprising facts about you
I once got blown off the loo by lightening ( a source of much embarrassment to my teenage kids! ) and I once represented Nottinghamshire in the world conker championships ! (sadly I didn’t win but one day I might!)
What makes you the happiest?
Well apart from doing Move it or Lose it classes of course, probably when I am walking in the Yorkshire or Derbyshire Dales with family or friends when the weather is sunny , followed by a drink and a pie in a local pub!
