Better Balance Practical CPD

£100.00

The workshop will focus on exercises to improve strength, balance and co-ordination so please come dressed to participate.

The workshop is aimed at those working with older people to develop knowledge and practical application to support those with declining balance.

Description

Better Balance – reducing the risk of falls

If you work with older people you will inevitably know someone who has had a fall and seen how this often affects their confidence, mobility and ability to get out and about to socialise. Preventing falls is a priority for the NHS as they lead to over 4 million bed days a year at a cost of over £2billion year.

Falls facts:

  • every minute, six people over 65 suffer a fall
  • one in three adults over 65 who live at home will have at least one fall a year
  • falls represent the most frequent and serious type of accident in people aged 65 and over
  • falls are the main cause of disability and the leading cause of death from injury among people aged over 75 in the UK
  • over a million falls could be prevented by using the right exercises

Learning Aims

  • To enhance understanding of the risk factors that contribute to falls in older adults and the serious implications these falls have on individuals, their families, and healthcare systems.
  • To increase awareness of the importance of bone health, muscle strengthening, and balance training in preventing falls and reducing frailty.
  • To provide practical knowledge on how to support older adults in maintaining their balance and mobility, reducing their risk of falls.
  • To empower fitness professionals to respond effectively in the event of a fall and know when to refer clients to falls prevention programmes and healthcare services.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this CPD course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key risk factors for falls in older adults and understand the impact falls can have on confidence, mobility, and overall quality of life.
  • Explain the connection between bone health, muscle strength, and balance, and how these factors influence the risk of falls.
